Overview

WeatherTrip is designed with privacy as a core principle. We collect and process only the minimum data necessary to provide weather forecasts for your driving route. This policy explains exactly what data we collect, how it's used, and your rights.

Data We Collect

Location Data

Purpose: Calculate driving routes and fetch weather forecasts for waypoints

How it's used: Sent to Apple MapKit for route calculation and Apple WeatherKit for weather data

Storage: Never stored on remote servers; cached temporarily on your device only

Sharing: Shared only with Apple's MapKit and WeatherKit services (governed by Apple's privacy policy)

Trip Data

What we store: Origin, destination, departure time, route waypoints, weather forecasts

Where it's stored: Locally on your device only, in the app's sandbox

How long: Until you delete the trip or uninstall the app

Who can access it: Only you; data never leaves your device except for Apple API requests

App Settings

Settings and preferences are stored locally in iOS UserDefaults:

• Unit system preferences (metric/imperial)
• Voice announcement settings
• Route preferences (avoid highways, tolls, borders)
• Alert announcement window (4-12 hours)
• Recent location history (stored locally only, maximum 3 per category)

Install Date

What we store: The date you first installed WeatherTrip

Purpose: Determine eligibility for grandfather pricing (lifetime free access for Year 1 users)

Storage: Locally in iOS UserDefaults only

Data We Don't Collect

WeatherTrip is committed to minimal data collection:

• ❌ No user accounts or registration
• ❌ No personal information (name, email, phone)
• ❌ No analytics or usage tracking
• ❌ No advertising identifiers (IDFA)
• ❌ No crash reports sent to third parties
• ❌ No behavioral tracking or profiling
• ❌ No location history beyond current trip
• ❌ No social media API integration or data sharing with social networks

Trip Sharing Feature

WeatherTrip allows you to share trip plans with others via a generated image:

• How it works: Trip details are rendered locally on your device into a shareable image
• What's shared: Route map, waypoint weather forecasts, departure/arrival times
• Data transmission: The generated image is shared using iOS's standard share sheet (Messages, Email, etc.)
• No external services: Image generation happens entirely on your device; no data sent to WeatherTrip servers
• Your control: You choose when to generate and who to share with; nothing is shared automatically

Important: When you share via Messages, Email, or social media apps, those services have their own privacy policies. WeatherTrip does not integrate with or send data to these services directly.

How We Use Your Information

Your information is used exclusively to provide and improve the app's services:

• Generate weather forecasts for your planned routes
• Calculate waypoints for incremental weather forecasts along your route
• Provide voice announcements during navigation
• Display weather alerts and road condition warnings
• Remember your preferences and recent locations

Third-Party Services

WeatherTrip integrates with Apple's first-party services only. No third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services are used.

Apple WeatherKit

Purpose: Fetch weather forecasts for your route waypoints

Data shared: Geographic coordinates and time for each waypoint

Purpose: Calculate driving routes between locations

Data shared: Start and end locations, route preferences

Apple CoreLocation

Purpose: Determine your current position for off-route detection and proximity alerts

Data shared: Current device location (processed locally)

Important: All third-party data processing is handled by Apple's services. WeatherTrip does not operate any backend servers.

Data Storage and Security

Local Storage Only

All user data is stored locally on your iOS device using Apple's secure storage mechanisms. WeatherTrip does not upload, sync, or store your data on remote servers.

Data Retention

• Active trips: Stored until you manually delete them or start a new trip
• Settings: Stored until you change them or uninstall the app
• Weather cache: Automatically expires after 30 minutes (5 minutes for severe weather)
• Recent locations: Maximum 3 per category (origins/destinations), older ones automatically removed
• Install date: Stored permanently for grandfather pricing eligibility

Security Measures

• All network communication uses HTTPS encryption
• Data stored locally is protected by iOS sandboxing
• Location data only shared with Apple's first-party services
• No custom encryption or third-party analytics SDKs

Location Permissions

WeatherTrip requests two types of location permission:

"When In Use" (Required)

Allows the app to access your location only while you're actively using it.

Used for:

• Calculating driving routes
• Determining current position on your route
• Detecting when you've gone off-route
• Fetching weather data for your current location

"Always" (Optional)

Allows the app to access your location in the background.

Used for:

• Sending proximity notifications when approaching waypoints with severe weather (33km ahead)
• Updating trip progress while app is in background
• Triggering timely weather alerts

You control location permissions: Permissions can be revoked at any time in iOS Settings → WeatherTrip → Location. Background alerts require "Always" permission; all other features work with "When In Use".

Other Permissions

Notifications (Optional)

Used to deliver weather alerts when approaching waypoints with severe conditions. Notifications are generated locally on your device. You can disable notifications in iOS Settings.

Background Audio (CarPlay)

Required for voice announcements via CarPlay. The app does not record audio. This permission is only used for text-to-speech output.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or share your personal information with third parties, except:

• Weather service providers (receive only GPS coordinates necessary for forecast retrieval)
• As required by law or legal process
• To protect our rights, property, or safety

Children's Privacy

WeatherTrip does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The app is designed for general audiences planning road trips and does not target children.

Data Deletion

To delete all WeatherTrip data:

• Delete specific trips: Not yet implemented (future feature)
• Clear all data: Delete the WeatherTrip app from your device
  • Settings → General → iPhone Storage → WeatherTrip → Delete App
  • All locally stored data is permanently removed

Important: Reinstalling the app will reset your install date. If subscriptions are active, you may lose grandfather pricing benefits (lifetime free access).

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your data:

• Access: All data is stored locally on your device (Settings app, UserDefaults)
• Deletion: Delete the app to remove all data
• Portability: Data is not collected in a format for export
• Correction: Edit trips and settings directly in the app
• Opt-out: Revoke location permissions in iOS Settings

Note: Since WeatherTrip does not collect personal data on servers, most data rights are exercised directly through iOS and the app itself.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident:

• WeatherTrip does not sell your personal information
• WeatherTrip does not share personal information with third parties for marketing
• No personal information is collected that would qualify under CCPA definitions

European Privacy Rights (GDPR)

If you are an EU/EEA resident:

• Legal basis: Legitimate interest (providing weather forecasts for your route)
• Data controller: WeatherTrip (independent developer)
• Data processor: Apple Inc. (WeatherKit, MapKit services)
• Data transfers: Location data processed by Apple (Privacy Shield certified)

International Users

WeatherTrip is available worldwide in 15 languages. Weather data is retrieved from Apple's WeatherKit servers. By using the app, you consent to the transfer of your location coordinates to Apple's services as necessary to provide forecasts.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy periodically to reflect:

• Changes in app functionality
• Changes in privacy regulations
• Changes in data practices

Notification:

• Updated policy will be posted on this website and referenced in app
• "Last Updated" date will be revised at the top of this page
• Material changes will be highlighted in app release notes

Continued use of WeatherTrip after policy updates constitutes acceptance of the changes.
